Retiring Working Equines for Good
Across Pakistan, hundreds of thousands of donkeys and horses spend their lives hauling overloaded carts through traffic and heat — often underfed, injured, and worked until they collapse. Rescue alone can't fix this: take one suffering donkey from an owner, and economics forces him to buy another. So TAWF attacks the root cause instead. We take the animal and the cart — and give the owner a motor cart in return.
How the Exchange Works

The exchange — The owner hands over his working animal and cart, and receives a motorized cart that carries more, travels further, and earns him a better living.

The legal commitment — Every owner signs a binding agreement: he will never again use any animal for labor. This is what makes the change permanent — the exchange retires an animal and closes a door.

The retirement — The equine comes home to our sanctuary, receives veterinary care at our hospital, and lives out its days grazing, resting, and never pulling a load again.

The ripple — A motor cart in the neighborhood shows every other cart owner that there's a way out that doesn't cost him his income.
Why This Works When Rescue Alone Doesn't
A working equine isn't just an animal — it's a family's income. Any solution that ignores that reality fails the animal, because it will simply be replaced. The cart exchange is designed so that the owner wins too: no fuel-hungry animal to feed and stable, faster deliveries, higher earnings. When doing the right thing pays better than the wrong thing, change sticks.
Where We're Taking It
Today, every motor cart is fully funded by our donors. Our goal for the program's next stage: offering motor carts on easy installments, so that repaid funds flow back in and free the next animal — turning each donation into a revolving fund that keeps working long after the first exchange.
